Take Out College Middleman and Save $46 billion.

President Obama wants to make college loans directly, instead of laundering them through various profit making corporations like Sallie Mae.  Doing so will save taxpayers $46 billion over the next 10 years.

That’s even more than doing away with oil subsidies, which costs taxpayers $40 billion over 10 years.

So who opposes such savings?  You got it.  The Republicans.  The party that describes itself as the fiscally responsible one.  The same party that opposes Obama’s recommendation to form a panel to study ways where we can save money.  The same party that opposes a consumer financial products protection agency.  The same party that opposed reforming our incredibly expensive health care system.  And opposes real regulatory reform of the Wall Street welfare queens.

You want to know where the Republicans stand you need answer only one question.  Who has the most money to fund re-election campaigns.  End of discussion.  Every other consideration, such as what’s good for consumers or the nation as a whole, aren’t even in the backroom shakedowns.

Here’s a link to Obama’s chief economist, Austan Goolsbee as he appeared on the John Daly show recently.

First of all, its the Daily Show with John Stewart. Did you know it’s a comedy show full of contrived, made up, specious trial ballon mis statements? That’s where all the pols go to tell “stories”.

Show me the money Beez. Show me where republicans flat out oppose this “just because”.

If they do, there must be more to it…….

    Thanks for the correction.

Except for the seriously ideologically challenged, matching the Republican stance on legislation on the stance of industry affected by proposed legislations (pick any industry you want) is 100% accurate. They match up every time.

Last week one of the news items popular was where the Republican Congressional Minority leaders were making the rounds of Wall Street and demanding more financial support for their opposition to reforming the financial system.

And that’s just last week’s news.

As for the Daily show and John Stewart, the show is fun, but Stewart’s humour is targeted and serious. The best humour often is.

It’s the same with Colbert as well. Different styles, but both shows use humour as a weapon against those they disagree with. Nothing new there.

And as for the Republican Party being the party of big corporate interests, this is hardly news. It’s been that way for the better part of the last century.

It’s just that this version of the GOP is particularly mean spirited and disenginous. Like the 41st Senator running against health care reform when he’d already voted for the same thing for Massachusetts: Universal health care reform designed by former Mass. Governor (r) Mitt Romney which served as the roadmap for the national legislation.

That kind of hypocrisy takes real chutzpah. I’ll give him that.

Watch the Daily show interview with Goolsbee. I did and I didn’t see any trial ballons there.

Google Elizabeth Warren on the Daily show. She wrote the book on consumer protection. No trial balloons there, the woman has put it all in book form. Best selling book form.

This country is far from beaten. What the brit hasn’t seen is the sleeping anger that american citizens build just before they put their boots on and go to kicking. Our government has foolishly tested those lines this time and it won’t be forgotten.
